Lawyers boycott courts
The legal fraternity on Saturday observed a token boycott of courts and staged a hunger strike against the removal of 60 superior courts judges.
The lawyers hoisted black flags on the bar buildings and held protest demonstrations. They also joined hunger strike camps staged by the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) and Save Judiciary Committee (SJC) to press the demand for restoration of the sacked judges.
The strike call was given by the Supreme Court Bar Association, the LHCBA and the Lahore Bar Association. The lawyers did not appear before courts after 11am.
Addressing a meeting, LHCBA President Anwar Kamal said that lawyers were ready to start a long march if the judges were not restored within the stipulated time. He asserted that the independence of the judiciary was a prerequisite for peace, progress and prosperity of the country
